Papers, 1839-1880.

Collection consists of ninety-three letters to Wightman, and a clipping attached to a letter with a short sketch and picture of South Boston Methodist Episcopal church, along with another paper fragment showing two buildings, people on the street and on horseback. Many of the letters concern the ordering of scientific apparatus for universities, colleges and academies. The schools were located throughout the U.S., some in Canada, and one in Cuba. Some letters contain scientific drawings or descriptions such as those given for certain air-pumps, batteries and pulleys. Apparatus requested included magic lanterns (projectors), flasks, sliders (slides), and even a piano. Models of the eye, ear, and steam engines were ordered. Good packing was a concern in letters and delays in the shipments of goods were apparently common. Among the correspondents were Elisha Mitchell, professor at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Theron Baldwin, instrumental in establishing several colleges.
